You've invested in a quality antler chew for your dog — one that's naturally shed, carefully graded, and built to last. But how you store that antler when it's not in use can make a real difference in how long it holds up, how appealing it stays to your dog, and whether it keeps its natural integrity over time.

The good news? Antler storage is simple. It just requires a little intention.

Why Storage Actually Matters

Antlers are a natural product. Unlike synthetic chews that are sealed in plastic and pumped with preservatives, a quality antler chew is exactly what it appears to be — dried, natural bone material. That's a feature, not a flaw. But it does mean that environmental factors like moisture, heat, and airflow can affect the chew over time.

Improper storage won't make an antler dangerous overnight, but it can cause it to dry out and become more brittle, lose some of its natural marrow scent (which is a big part of why dogs love them), or pick up odors from its surroundings. A little care goes a long way.

The Basics: Cool, Dry, and Away from Direct Sunlight

The single most important rule for antler storage is to keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Heat accelerates drying, and excessive dryness can cause the outer layer of the antler to become more brittle than it should be — especially for dogs who are already aggressive chewers.

A drawer, a shelf in a closet, or a dedicated pet supply basket in a shaded area of your home all work well. Avoid leaving antlers on a sunny windowsill, near a heating vent, or in a hot car for extended periods.

Short-Term Storage: Between Chew Sessions

If your dog chews on their antler daily, simple placement on a clean, dry surface is all you need. A small tray, basket, or designated spot on a shelf keeps things tidy and ensures the antler isn't sitting in moisture (like a wet floor or damp mat).

If your dog tends to carry their antler around and bury it in blankets or dog beds, check on it occasionally. Fabric can trap moisture around the chew, particularly if your dog drools on it heavily during sessions.

Long-Term Storage: Spare or Backup Antlers

Many dog owners — especially those with multiple dogs or dogs who go through antlers quickly — like to buy in small batches and store extras. For antlers you won't be using for several weeks or months, a few extra steps help preserve freshness.

Use a breathable container. A paper bag, wooden box, or mesh bag allows for airflow while keeping dust off. Avoid airtight plastic containers for long-term storage, as they can trap any residual moisture and encourage a musty smell.

Add a light coat of coconut oil for very long storage. If you're storing an antler for more than a few months, rubbing a very thin coat of food-grade coconut oil onto the surface can help prevent over-drying. This is optional, but it's a natural, dog-safe way to maintain some moisture in the outer layer.

Keep them off the ground. A shelf or raised surface keeps antlers away from floor-level humidity and pests.

What About Used Antlers?

If your dog has been actively chewing an antler and you want to set it aside for a few days, give it a quick rinse with warm water and let it air dry completely before storing. This removes saliva buildup that can attract bacteria or cause odor over time. Never store a wet antler — let it dry thoroughly first.

Signs an Antler Has Passed Its Prime

Even with great storage, antlers don't last forever. If an antler has become very small (a choking hazard), developed an unusual smell, shows signs of mold, or has cracked in a way that creates sharp edges, it's time to retire it. A well-stored antler, however, should stay in good condition for months.

Antlers are one of the most durable, natural chews available — and a little mindful storage keeps them that way. Treat them like any other quality natural product in your home, and your dog will enjoy every last chew session from start to finish.
